Frequently Asked Questions
Questions worth answering before you call.
Straightforward answers about how we work — so your first conversation with us can be about your matter, not our process.
General
Yes. Every new matter starts with a direct conversation with a partner — not an intake coordinator — to understand what you're facing and whether we're the right fit before any work begins.
Our office is at 100 Adelaide St W in downtown Toronto. We meet in person, by video, or by phone — whichever works best for you and the matter at hand.
Many of our clients have matters that extend across Canada or internationally. Where a matter requires local counsel in another jurisdiction, we coordinate that relationship directly so you don't have to manage it yourself.
Fees & Process
Depending on the matter, we bill hourly, on a flat fee, or through an ongoing retainer arrangement. We agree on the structure and give you a realistic estimate before any work begins — no surprises on the invoice.
It depends entirely on the matter — a real estate closing might take weeks, while litigation can take considerably longer. We give you a realistic timeline at the outset and update it as the matter develops.
Yes. Every file is opened and overseen by a partner from intake through resolution. Associates support the work, but you always have direct access to the partner responsible for your matter.
For Individuals
Whatever documents relate to your situation — contracts, correspondence, court documents, or financial records. If you're not sure what's relevant, bring what you have; we'll tell you what else we need.
Yes, this is a common request. We'll review the file, get you up to speed on where things stand, and take over from there with minimal disruption.
For Businesses
Yes — from incorporation through financing rounds. We understand that early-stage companies need advice that's fast and proportionate to the stakes, not billed like a Fortune 500 engagement.
Yes. Many of our business clients retain us on an ongoing advisory basis, so there's always a lawyer who already knows the company on the other end of the phone.
Confidentiality
Yes. Every conversation, from the first call onward, is treated as confidential and protected by solicitor-client privilege where applicable.
We run a conflicts check before accepting any new matter. If a conflict exists, we'll tell you upfront and, where possible, help you find another lawyer suited to the matter.
